What to do in Westport
Westport is situated in the heart of the Rideau Region, on the historic Rideau Canal
and Upper Rideau Lake.
Our history in this small village adds to the beauty of the region making it one of the most desirable vacation spots in Eastern Ontario.
Many people have asked what there is to do in Westport. Well, what is your
pleasure?
Start
with the walking tour of Westport (click here).
Golf: there are
many golf courses (9 and 18 holes) within 30 minutes of our house including
Canada's oldest course; our courses are picturesque and enjoy lower traffic
than city courses
Hiking: Foley
Mountain, a protected environment, is a few minutes from our house; it has
hiking trails and a beach; the Rideau trail (marked hiking trail from Ottawa
to Kingston) passes right through Westport
Swimming: in addition to Foley Mountain beach, there is
the Lion's Club Beach a 5 minute drive or 20 minute walk from our house;
Bicycling: enjoy cycling through our beautiful rolling
countryside past scenic lakes or visit the historic Rideau Canal locks
Boating: ride the Rideau, from Ottawa to Kingston and
spend the night in Westport harbour; rent a boat or go on a boat trip from
Portland (20 minutes); take a Thousand Islands cruise in the St Lawrence River
from Gananoque (35 minutes) or Kingston (35 minutes)
Flying: The Rideau Lakes Aerodrome and Flying
Club is situated only 1 kilometre outside the village of Westport. The
federally registered airport has a 3100-foot runway capable of accommodating
single and twin-engine aircraft.
Fishing: there are many fishing lakes within minutes
from us Horseback riding: stables in Portland (20 minutes) offer specialized
programs for riders of all ages
History: history is everywhere in our area; Perth (20
minutes) is a beautiful little city to visit; historic Kingston is 35 minutes
away; we are situated in the middle of the Rideau Canal, with its historic
lock and picturesque villages, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Culture: there are always lots of art shows, craft
shows, and musical events happening within a short drive of our house. Check

Shopping: good bargains starting with Westport's fine
shops, right across the street from our house, and an interesting assortment
of boutiques in nearby Perth
And further afield – you can get to Ottawa downtown
(Parliament Hill, many museums, Byward Market, etc, etc,) in 1½ hours from us;
if you have your passport, you can go to the US and visit Boldt Castle on
picturesque Alexandria Bay (1 hour)
And if you are feeling lucky, there is always the casino
in Gananoque (35 minutes).
